Those ‘Silly’ Experiments

May 14th, 2009 Pete No comments

Someone in Sedona, USA, ordered one of the ‘Headless’ posters designed by our very own Sam Blight, then sent the following message:

“I want to express my gratitude to you for continuing the work of Douglas Harding. I had come across the Web site many months ago, had saved my favorites, but my rational mind completely dismissed the experiments as silly.

A few day ago, I was again drawn to it, did the experiments and it blew my mind away. I have been meditating daily since the mid 1970’s, studying Advaita Vedanta teachings for about 3 years now, and just by doing a few of the experiments, I was finally able to see the Spaciousness, the clear emptiness of the Awareness That I AM. What an incredibly simple, fast and effective method! We must continue to spread this message.”

If you would like to see a new short film by Richard Lang showing one of the experiments mentioned above, just >Click Here. The film, Still Point, is less than 4 minutes long. and shows how you are the still point of the turning world.

Spaciousness

May 14th, 2009 Pete No comments

Space so empty undisturbed
Galaxies don’t touch it
are barely heard
It points to something
that can’t be seen
It is; we are
It isn’t; we aren’t.

Dialling the Lord

May 14th, 2009 Pete No comments

In the early 1960s, the Queen was asked to make the UK’s first-ever official and ceremonial STD telephone call. The Minister responsible and accompanying her was then called the Postmaster General. His name was Ernest Marples. The call was to be made from Bristol to Scotland where the Queen was to speak to the Lord Provost of Glasgow.

The Queen was handed a number to dial. She looked at Ernest Marples and said: “Postmaster, I do not have much of a head for numbers. What happens if I misdial?”

“Ma’am,” said Marples, “on this occasion it doesn’t matter what number you dial, you will still get the Lord Provost of Glasgow.”

Beyond The Name

May 6th, 2009 Pete No comments

The concept of the name of God is one which has fascinated scholars and philosophers from the dawn of time. God reportedly revealed ‘His’ name to Moses via the burning-bush; as recorded in the book of Exodus 3:14. The name Moses heard was, Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh. Actually, it’s a phrase rather than a name, so what does it mean, and does it have any significance for us today?

In biblical Hebrew, Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh is a deceptively simple phrase consisting of the relative pronoun asher sandwiched between two instances of the first person singular of the verb hayah — to be. Ehyeh is most commonly translated as “I am.” Asher is a remarkable Hebrew word that can mean, that, who, which or where, but in this context, is most often translated as ‘that’.

Therefore, generally speaking, Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh, or ‘I am that I am’, can be taken to indicate the self-existence and infinite eternality of God as the Source of all. It indicates the unity between the formless Divine Nature and the essence of all forms.

As Abhayananda comments in his illuminating book, ‘The Supreme Self’: “I am is an immediately evident fact — perhaps the most evident of all facts. It is not necessary to think in order to be aware I am — Descartes’ assertion to the contrary notwithstanding. I am is self-evident and logically prior to thought, for it is the I of ‘I think’.

This I am (Sanskrit: Aham; Hebrew: Ehyeh) is synonymous with consciousness in humankind. It is the constant underlying background, which serves as witness as well as substratum to all possible mental states….

The Pathless Path

May 6th, 2009 Pete No comments

First of all, desire the Truth more than anything and don’t be afraid of the apparently bottomless pit of the anguish of frustrated desire. Remember to remember that nothing else is even nearly as important. Everything else leads to more of the same, over and over again. I’d give up everything; family, friends, possessions, future, past, even my life for even a moment of the Truth.

Next; question, examine and doubt everything; every thought, desire, motive, rationalization, reason, feeling, and perception. Look for what’s behind them… and what’s behind that… Don’t take anything for granted. Don’t believe anything I think. Every reaction is a ‘clue’; every judgment, hurt, frustration, resentment, satisfaction, pride, fear, etc.

Look especially at attachments, addictions, habits, compulsions, lies, rationalizations and things I can’t accept and reject. Be honest. Be accepting since I’m less likely to even notice the things I can’t bear to see, especially about myself.

Try anything that seems like it could help; (e.g. meditation, reading, memorization, lectures, groups, retreats, workshops, correspondence, DVDs, exercises, experiments (e.g. headlessness) documentaries, self-analysis, diet, supplements, arts (e.g. calligraphy), exercise, fasting, time alone, etc.

Take note of the behaviors of others, ridiculous or otherwise. Notice what’s behind it, why and look for similar behaviors and motives in yourself.

Work with others struggling as I am. Help each other deal with resistances and barriers. Confront each other about things we might be blind to like hidden assumptions, contradictions, inconsistencies, dead ends, laziness, procrastination, excuses, rationalizations and other subtle lies (and the motivations behind them; e.g. fears, desires and prides).

Cut out unnecessary activities like entertainment and other distractions, to make available the greatest amount of time and energy possible for finding the Truth.

Spend as much time as practical sitting quietly, meditatively watching conscious/awareness itself and noting the patterns and implications of the many thoughts that come along to interrupt conscious awareness.

Practice dying; or at least stepping aside and not doing. Sit quietly, meditatively relaxed and stop trying to control even thoughts or observing. The so-called person trying to control everything is probably a big part of the problem and main barrier to seeing the Truth of things.

Remember the possibility expressed by the quote; “So long as one wants anything with sufficient intensity to generate anxiety about not getting it, this constriction of consciousness will detract from opening to cosmic awareness.”

So, work like crazy, and strain with every fiber, but remember there’s no guarantee. Accept that you may never find anything, but without regret since nothing else matters. Work “without fear of failure or hope of gain”.

And, don’t lose any sleep over this; figuratively, since worrying and whining do no good, or literally; since sleep depravation doesn’t usually help either; making meditation nearly impossible or ineffective and is usually a sign of trying to do too much and falling back into diversionary, distracting activities.

PS; The biggest challenge, after maintaining determination to persist in the face of apparently hopelessly long odds, is to stay conscious enough to remember to continue doing all the things that need to be done (above) instead of drifting along half asleep in old habits, lost in one thought after another about the usual mundane amusements and trials of life.

I am That I am

May 6th, 2009 Pete No comments

I am all Understanding, not the understood;
the flery life of divine wisdom.
I ignite the beauty of the plains, I sparkle the waters, I burn in the sun, and the moon, and the stars.
I am the divine power through which God decided and sanctioned the creation of all things.
I am the yearning for good.

Oneness

May 6th, 2009 Pete No comments

Oneness is the direct experiencing of reality as it is — without an experiencer. You are the looking, not the objects being perceived. So any name, concept, emotion, sensation, body, self-image, personal identity, role, title, or historical fact that is perceived is an object in awareness. It is not who you are. This reveals that what is looking is not an object. You are not a separate person. The ’separate person’ is an object in awareness. You are no-thing — awarenesss itself.

But no-thing or no self is really only half the story. When it is seen that there is not an experiencer, or that the experiencer is an object in awareness, a more mature understanding reveals itself. This understanding is not conceptual or intellectual (concepts and the intellect are merely objects appearing in awareness).

It isn’t something that can be grasped by thinking about it because it is what you are. This understanding arises when it is seen that the nothingness that you are, the pure perceiving, is not separate from what it is perceiving, from the objects. The entire universe is the Self.

Don’t try to live from some conceptual idea of Oneness. A conceptual idea of Oneness is just another object in awareness. Through the direct experiencing of all that is arising in this moment including any image of a separate self, Oneness is revealed to be your true nature.

The Unmentionable

May 6th, 2009 Pete No comments

When her daughters were very small girls, a society woman gave a high tea at which one of the guests was to be the senior J P Morgan. The girls were to be brought in, introduced and ushered out. Her great fear was the possibility that Anne, the most outspoken of them, might comment audibly upon Mr Morgan’s celebrated and conspicuous nose.

She, therefore, took pains to explain to Anne that personal observations were impolite, and to caution her especially against making any comment upon Mr Morgan’s nose, no matter what she might think of it. When the moment came and the children were brought in, the lady held her breath as she saw Anne’s gaze unfalteringly fix upon this object and remain there. Nonetheless, the introduction was made, the little girls curtsied and were sent on their way.

With a sigh of relief she turned back to her duties as hostess and said to her chief guest, “And now, Mr Morgan, will you have cream or lemon in your nose?”
