Dialling the Lord

In the early 1960s, the Queen was asked to make the UK’s first-ever official and ceremonial STD telephone call. The Minister responsible and accompanying her was then called the Postmaster General. His name was Ernest Marples. The call was to be made from Bristol to Scotland where the Queen was to speak to the Lord Provost of Glasgow.

The Queen was handed a number to dial. She looked at Ernest Marples and said: “Postmaster, I do not have much of a head for numbers. What happens if I misdial?”

“Ma’am,” said Marples, “on this occasion it doesn’t matter what number you dial, you will still get the Lord Provost of Glasgow.”
