We may ask, “How are we to attain the unitive state of awareness?” Until we are ‘lifted’ into the experience of unity by the grace of God, duality for us must continue to exist.

When that experience is about to happen to a person, that person’s mind becomes irresistably withdrawn from worldly concerns, and becomes centered instead upon one all-consuming love, a singular sort of love, for the very source of love within.

And in the process of consummating this love, solitude is procured, giving the mind the opportunity to become detached from the pull of distracting thoughts and sense-impressions; and the mind is then focused with great intensity upon its aim.

Consciousness, like an unflickering flame in a windless room, becomes pure and clear. And then suddenly it sees or knows who it has always been.

On knowing That, everything is known; the seeker will have seen the ultimate Truth of all existence. But it is not “seen” as something separate from himself; rather he knows It as “I.” He knows, “I am the One existence; all this is myself”:

In this state of absorbed contemplation, there is no longer any question of holding an object in view; the vision is such that seeing and seen are one; object and act of vision have become identical.

… There, our Self-seeing is a communion with the Self restored to purity. No doubt we should not speak of “seeing,” but, instead of [speaking of] “seen” and “seer,” speak boldly of a simple unity.

For in this seeing we neither see, nor distinguish, nor are there, two. The man is changed, no longer himself nor belonging to himself; he is merged with the Supreme, sunken into It, one with It; it is only in separation that duality exists.

This is why the vision baffles telling; for how could a man bring back tidings of the Supreme as something separate from himself when he has seen It as one with himself?

… Without that vision, the soul is unillumined; but illumined thereby, it has attained what it sought. And this is the true Goal set before the soul: to receive that light, to see the Supreme by the Supreme; … for That by which the illumination comes is That which is to be seen just as we do not see the Sun by any other light than its own.

How is this to be accomplished? Let all else go!

When you view the world of appearance through the distortion of (your mental) conditioning, I call that “onion vision.”

However, when the awakening happens, there is a total and complete switchover to viewing life now from the Pearl of Consciousness that you really are. You view from the advantage of Source and not from what you have been conditioned as an onion to believe from birth.

But please understand that, while you now have “Pearl Vision,” you still have a lifetime of conditioned layers that need to be removed. That part is not a sudden or momentary happening.

Maybe a few of the “biggies” such as Jesus or Krishna had a sudden and spontaneous deliverance, but that seems to be an exception to the natural process that may well take the rest of your life.

In some liturgical churches, each service begins with a greeting. The officiating clergyman says, “The Lord be with you.” And the congregation used to respond, “And with thy spirit.” But, with the modernising of the liturgy, the response is now, “The Lord be with
you.” and everyone says, “And also with you.”

There is the story of the visiting bishop who went to such a church where the sound system was old and unreliable. He went to the microphone and tapped it several times and finally said, “There’s something wrong with this!” and the whole congregation answered,
“And also with you.”

How does one seek union with God?
The harder you seek, the more distance you create between Him and you.
So what does one do about the distance?
Understand or recognize that it isn’t there.
Does that mean that God and I are one?
Not one. Not two.
How is that possible?
The sun and its light, the ocean and the wave, the singer and his song.

The mystics describe reality as an indivisible Unity containing two, apparently distinct, aspects: an eternally unchanging and constant aspect, and an aspect that appears changing and inconstant.

To those who have never experienced that Unity, such declarations about It must appear illogical and self-contradictory. But, say the mystics, however paradoxical it may seem to the rational intellect, that is simply and truly the nature of the one reality.

In order to explain that reality which is both the eternal God and the world of forms, a reality which appears to possess two such incompatible aspects while remaining one reality, it became apparent very early on, historically, that it was necessary to introduce two terms, each to
designate one aspect of this dual-faceted Being, yet which would in no way represent two separate and distinct entities, but one — a One with two faces.

Superficially, most of the Nasruddin stories may be used as jokes. They are told and retold endlessly in the teahouses and caravanserais, in the homes and on the radio waves, of Asia. But it is inherent in the Nasruddin story that it may be understood at any of many depths. There is the joke, the moral – and the little extra which brings the consciousness of the potential mystic a little further on the way to realization. Here’s a sample:

One hot day, Nasruddin was taking it easy in the shade of a walnut tree. After a time, he started eying speculatively, the huge pumpkins growing on vines and the small walnuts growing on a majestic tree.

Sometimes I just can’t understand the ways of God! he mused. Just fancy letting tinny walnuts grow on so majestic a tree and huge pumpkins on the delicate vines!

Just then a walnut dropped off and fell smack on Mullah Nasruddin’s bald head.

He got up at once and lifting up his hands and face to heaven in supplication, said: Oh, my God! Forgive my questioning your ways! You are all-wise. Where would I have been now, if pumpkins grew on trees!

Awakening to inner freedom is the only way out of illusion. Awakening frees you from the ego’s grip and its endless fears and insecurities. It brings you to the joy of your true nature, the joy not dependent on objects or reflected light, but the light shining from within you, the light which you are. This is the light that Jesus spoke of when he said, “I am/you are the Light.”

It is important to remember that awakening is not just about your own bliss and freedom. The deeper you move into the enlightened awareness of your real nature, the more you feel your connection with the rest of humanity.

Then your motive for awakening becomes less personal, and more about the larger picture. You realize the sooner a critical mass of us wakes up to our true, divine nature, the sooner we’ll have a world working for everyone and everything. If you have children, people, pets, or things
you love then having a world which is a safe, nurturing, and harmonious environment for all of us becomes a real priority.

The teaching and practice are powerful tools to bring you into the place where wisdom and love meet, where mind and heart become one. As more of us find this union within ourselves, then regardless of whether we live in relative anonymity, or hold positions of leadership and influence, there is a cumulative effect.

The social atmosphere starts to become saturated with consciousness, and others, still not quite awake, pick up on it. It’s beautiful how it works.
